AEON VIETNAM PARTICIPATES IN THE CONSULTATION SEMINAR REGARDING THE INTERGOVERNMENTAL NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE ON PLASTIC POLLUTION
26.03.2024
On March 26, 2024, AEON Vietnam participated in the consultation workshop 'Global Plastics Agreement: Towards the 4th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee Session (INC-4)' organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. From there, solutions to reduce plastic waste are shared and proposed from a retailer's perspective through the conference.
The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), aimed to gather business opinions to formulate appropriate policies and prepare for Vietnam's participation in INC-4, which will take place from April 23-29 in Ottawa, Canada
Accordingly at the seminar, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hue - Corporate Communications & External Affairs General Manager of AEON Viet Nam has shared their stance, as well as mentioned measures regarding plastic waste reduction from the perspective of a corporation.
"Specifically, AEON Vietnam proposes the transition from single-use plastic items to more environmentally friendly materials such as paper or sugarcane bagasse. This is also an initiative that the Japanese retailer has been applying for many years. Additionally, AEON has implemented various other activities such as offering customers the option to rent shopping bags, establishing 'Green Line' cashier counters that prioritize the elimination of plastic bags, and organizing 'No Plastic Day' each month. The goal is that by 2030, 80% of AEON Vietnam's customers will use eco-friendly bags when shopping."
The workshop connected various ministries, businesses, international organizations, research institutes, etc., to share experiences and knowledge in preparation for the upcoming Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee session. By participating and sharing its voice, AEON aims to contribute not only to Vietnam's transition towards a Global Plastics Agreement specifically, but also to the sustainable development of Vietnam's environment in general.
*The workshop was attended by the National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Vietnam, the World Wide Fund for Nature in Vietnam (WWF-Vietnam), and the Pacific Environment (PE).
