AEON VIETNAM ANNOUNCES THE SCHEDULE FOR PROJECT OF DISPOSABLE PLASTIC WASTE REDUCTION

On September 23, 2019, AEON Vietnam Co., Ltd. ("AEON Vietnam") held the Launching Ceremony of "the Disposable Plastic Waste Reduction Project at AEON Mall - Tan Phu Celadon, Ho Chi Minh City; officially announced the implementation roadmap of the project, in which the first phase will focus on minimizing the use of persistent plastic bags; join hands with customers and the community to step by step reduce and replace disposable plastic waste, in order to contribute to protecting the living environment and towards improving the health of customers in particular and local communities in general.
The ceremony was honored to welcome the presence of Representatives of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, Representative of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Representative of Tan Phu District Government, Representatives of Universities affiliated with AEON Vietnam, with customers and local people.

Mr. Sasamori Hiroaki - Deputy General Director of AEON Vietnam said: “In Japan, AEON Group has implemented the project to encourage customers to bring personal bags when shopping since 1991; By 2007, AEON has become the first chain of general merchandise stores in Japan to stop providing free plastic bags in the entire system of more than 1,600 stores of AEON; As of February 2018, this program of AEON has contributed to reducing 2.7 billion plastic bags. Based on the successes achieved in Japan, together with the support and cooperation from our customers, partners, local residents and the Government, we believe that efforts to gradually implement disposable plastic waste reduction actions in General merchandise store system of AEON Vietnam will achieve the expected results in order to achieve the goal of reducing plastic waste according to the roadmap of the Government of Vietnam, towards protecting the environment and improving the health of the people.”
The action program is started by the commitments of more than 2,500 AEON Vietnam employees and board of directors
This is a long-term project of AEON Vietnam, which has been implemented synchronously from AEON staff and then spread to customers and communities where AEON is present. With the philosophy "the actions of each AEON People represent the actions of the entire AEON Vietnam Family", AEON staff will be the most practical models in the journey to spread the project's mission to customers and community.
Specifically, in early September, AEON Vietnam officially started the project among all employees of the company. Accordingly, more than 2,500 employees of AEON Vietnam nationwide and the Board of Directors of the Company together pledge to join hands to reduce disposable plastic waste in every daily activity such as: AEON staff uses environmental bags when shopping and not using plastic cups, as well as saying no to plastic straws, not using bottled water in meetings and conferences, etc.…
AEON staff will be the "seeds" that help spread messages and actions to many people, in which customers are the focus, towards the goal of building habits of using eco-friendly products, can be reused many times in daily life, with the aim of minimizing and then progressing not to use disposable plastic products in the future according to the roadmap of Vietnamese Government.
AEON Vietnam's efforts in joining hands to encourage customers to use eco-friendly items
Previously, AEON Vietnam cooperated with Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture to organize the contest "Multi-function design - Community cohesion" from September 10, 2019 to September 28, 2019 to find out a solution of designing a new, optimal environment bag, to meet the maximum needs of customers; thereby encourage customers to carry their own bags when shopping, reduce the use of disposable plastic bags. 3 best entries will be presented to the jury to vote for the First - Second - Third prize at the Awards Ceremony at the end of September. Not stopping there, works meeting practical requirements will be put into actual production to be introduced to consumers in the entire system of AEON Vietnam General Merchandise Stores in nationwide.
With the goal of encouraging customers to build a habit of using eco-friendly items that can be reused many times to minimize plastic bags when shopping, AEON Vietnam has been gradually implementing each item of disposable plastic products to eco-friendly products; also creating a roadmap towards plastic bag charging at AEON Vietnam General Merchandise Store system in 2020. Specifically, till the end of 2019, there will be activities such as:
- From September 23, 2019 to November 30, 2019, customers will receive a direct discount of VND 2,000 if using a personal cup when purchasing Tea and Coffee drinks at AEON Café area on the ground floor in General Merchandise Stores of AEON Vietnam.
- AEON Vietnam will gradually replace plastic cups and handles to paper cups and products with eco-friendly materials; or will gradually replace the disposable plastic bowl with bagasse bowl at the buffet food court on the ground floor of the AEON Vietnam General Merchandise Stores.
- By the end of 2019, AEON Vietnam will use 100% biodegradable bags at General Merchandise Store AEON - Ha Dong (Hanoi City) to replace the 50% biodegradable bag that is being used in popular retailer systems today and then will deploy to the entire system across the country in 2020.
Besides the long-term plan to reduce disposable plastic waste, AEON Vietnam has been continuously implementing a variety of activities to join hands with customers and local communities to improve the quality of the living environment such as: AEON Cleaning Day taking place every month, activities of garbage sorting at source at AEON Vietnam Malls since 2014, accompany with environmental programs of local government, etc.
